My Review – Draw 50 Sea Creatures

I am a sucker for drawing books. I have owned a couple of Lee J. Ames books and love them. So, of course, I was excited to be offered to review his Draw 50 Sea Creatures. Sea creatures seem to be a popular thing to draw and paint. Don’t believe me just look on pinterest…seriously 100’s of sea critters. It’s so whimsical and fun!

When first going through the book I was expecting it to be all things under water, but I soon realized it was all creatures who live around and in the sea. For example, sea otter, pelican, puffin, penguin and a couple others. It even had some plant life drawings, which is super helpful if you are wanting to draw an underwater scene and not just one animal.

If you are not familiar with the 50 drawings series, Ames and Harvey give you 6 simple steps to create a drawing. The first step is very basic that a child could easily get then every other step you start to tweak and change things. By the 6th step, you have an awesome sea creature in front of you. It’s a fun way to learn how to draw and it would be great for older kids to experience.

Here is a drawing I did of a sea horse (pg. 18). I first sketched it then added watercolor.
