3 Keys to Conquer Worry in Your Life

I’m not sure if everyone is familiar with the phrase “worry-wart” but where I’m from it can be used to describe an excessive worrier.

If you would like to embody the essence of the usage of this word then imagine a short older woman with a country accent aggressively saying, “Stop being such a worry-wart, everything will be fine!”

No one wants to be called a worry-wart, but sadly we all do worry. It seems to be human nature to freak out about things that make us not feel in control.

Essentially that’s what worry is right? When we surrender worry to God, we are surrendering the insecurity of not being able to control a situation to our desired outcome. This is a powerful thing to hand over to God!

conquer worry

The Bible is riddled with verses to help us get out of our worrying slump, but sometimes, it takes more than just reading a couple of verses to get over some things.

I can’t be the only one guilty of googling verses and hoping it will all get better if I read a couple of them!

Something the Lord has really pushed me in is being active in His Word! The Bible instructs us in so many ways, and I just think it is so amazing! Here are 3 keys to say “bye bye” to worry!

1. Pray and give thanks

In Philippians 4:6-7 Paul tells us to worry about nothing. He then goes on to give us instructions on how to deal with worry. He says “In everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all comprehension, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.”

These are the kind of instructions that get me pumped! This verse breaks down how to combat worry effectively AND tells me that once I do these things than the Peace of God will wash over my human understanding!

So you might be thinking, what in the world is supplication? We are all very familiar with the word prayer, and even the word thanksgiving. Supplication is, simply put, to make your requests known to God.

I think sometimes we conjure up these thoughts on why we shouldn’t ask God for something. As if we are being prideful or arrogant in asking Him, OR (my favorite) inconveniencing Him by having to listen to a list of my requests.

God loves it when we come to Him! Don’t be afraid to pour out your heart to Him. As much as we may try to hide our “wants and needs list” He already sees and knows it! Pray and be thankful my friends! For He is so good!

2. Seek God’s Kingdom and His righteousness

How many times have we been caught up in the midst of a situation and immediately our minds take over and create the WORST scenario possible of how it may not work out? I am totally guilty of this.

Before I knew it, I had made a mountain out of a molehill.

Many of us are familiar with the wonderful words of Jesus in Matthew 6, “But seek first His kingdom and His righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.”

He says this to the people after he asks them why they worry about things such as food, drink, and clothing. Now, some of our worries may be larger or smaller than those things, but regardless, this is a strategy Jesus is giving to fight off worry.

But what does seeking His Kingdom and righteousness look like? Jesus is telling us to seek two things in this verse; God’s Kingdom, whichis a place; and God’s righteousness, which is a characteristic of God’s nature.

When I seek the Kingdom of God I am seeking out His will for the situation and His truth based on the laws of the Kingdom of Heaven. When it tells me to seek His righteousness I am essentially seeking God Himself, the Ruler of this Kingdom.

Seeking these things take my mind off the worldly laws and rules, whether it’s sickness, disease, finances, or relationship issues, and onto the laws and rules set by the King of Heaven.

This allows my mind to submit under His authority. It is quite freeing! Once you focus on the will of God, start declaring into the situation! Our words and declarations are so powerful!

3. Remember who you are in Him

“Remember who you are” When I read this I can’t help but visualize myself as a young lion looking up to the clouds and hearing a billowing voice say “Remember who you are.” (I know you all read that in the Lion King voice!

How can you not!!!) But seriously though, it is so vital to understanding our identity in Christ to overcome anxiety and worry. Here’s a portion of Jesus’s talk on worry from Matthew 6,

“For this reason I say to you, do not be worried about your life, as to what you will eat or what you will drink; nor for your body, as to what you will put on. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothing?

Look at the birds of the air, that they do not sow, nor reap nor gather into barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not worth much more than they? And who of you by being worried can add a single hour to his life? And why are you worried about clothing?

Observe how the lilies of the field grow; they do not toil nor do they spin, yet I say to you that not even Solomon in all his glory clothed himself like one of these. But if God so clothes the grass of the field, which is alive today and tomorrow is thrown into the furnace, will He not much more clothe you?”

Before Jesus says to seek first God’s Kingdom and Righteousness, He reminds the people of their identity. He refers to God in this passage as Father.

He is reminding the people that God is not only seeing them as people who serve Him, but He also sees them as His children. If we can remember who we are as children to Him and how much He cares about us, then we can overcome so much more than worry! I think this is so powerful!

Sometimes it is easy to forget who we are in Him when uncertain situations arise. But we are to have no fear! Our Father in heaven loves us and cares for us more than anyone in this universe! He wants us to trust Him with all situations, good and bad. It’s time to kick worry in the pants!

Happy NON-worrying my friends!
