Growing Your Faith 7 ways to increase your faith

I will never forget hearing this teaching titled, “The 4 Legs when I was a youth and youth leader. My then youth pastor, Banning Liebscher would teach on it every year.

It was a simple message but it impacted me greatly.

I so deeply wanted to be a Christian who was always growing and moving forward in my faith and devotion to the Lord.

The idea of becoming stagnant or cold in my faith was not an option. I didn’t want my passion for God to ever fizzle out and die because I neglected my relationship with Him.

And I was very aware that could happen as I saw people in church slowly grow cold in their faith and some even walk away from the Lord.

I wanted wisdom that I could apply to my life that would in turn help me run the race set before me and this teaching gave me the keys to do that.

Even 15  years later I still think about that teaching. It became so part of me and my walk that I have been teaching those same keys to my leadership teams and audience.

So, I want to touch on the 4 ways you can grow according to that teaching, but I also want to share a few ways that have helped me learn how to grow my faith.

Let’s get started!

How to Grow Your Faith: 7 Faith Growing Tips

Faith is an integral part of Christianity. It’s necessary and without you can’t be a Christian.

But without faith it is impossible to please Him, for he who comes to God must believe that He is, and that He is a rewarder of those who diligently seek Him. – Hebrews 11:6

There are different measures of faith according to scriptures, and I won’t be able to go into that in this article. But it is seen throughout scripture that we can strengthen and grow our faith. It’s not a static measurement.

*The first 4 in this list are part of the teaching I learned as a late teen. After that are my tips. The other 3 are some of my own faith growing tips.

1. Worship and Prayer Increase Your Faith

you can grow in faith by worshipping Jesus

One of the most powerful things you can do as a Christian is worship and pray. It connects you with God and builds your relationship with Him while impacting your life.

Prayer and Worship have the power to shift situations, mindsets, and atmospheres. And not just yours, but those who are around you.

From David playing his harp and the evil spirit leaving King Saul, to Paul and Silas singing in prison and an angel showing up to rescue them.

Things happen when you pray and worship!

I heard a minister once say, You want to change your life? Then pray.

Rejoice always, pray continually, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus. – 1 Thessalonians 5: 16-18

2. Bible Reading Builds Up Your Faith

Bible reading is more than just learning or getting information. The Holy Spirit breathes on His word and it carries the power to transform us and grow us in our faith in Him.

It feeds our spirit and gives us wisdom and discernment when we hear off-the-wall teachings or ideas. It’s a powerful key, especially when used with prayer and worship.

I would also encourage you to go beyond just daily Bible reading and actually dig deeper and do some Bible studies. You will be amazing what you learn and how it will draw you closer to the Lord.

All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work. – 2 Timothy 3:16-17

3. Fellowship: Iron Sharpens Iron

how to grow in faith through fellowship

In our western world, we celebrate our independence and “doing my thing.” The idea of fellowship and community is sometimes hard to fully grasp for us.

We think it’s just hanging out with people on occasions. But that’s not what Bible calls fellowship.

It’s coming together consistently and sharing in life and faith. It’s close, it’s intimate, it’s what the Bible calls, iron sharpens iron (Proverbs 27:17).

You can’t sharpen something without the two pieces touching. Deep down we all want this, and we just expect people to connect with us.

The fact is fellowship is just like our first two ways that help grow your faith. We are the ones that need to be proactive towards it. Don’t wait to be asked, initiate and connect.

“They met constantly to hear the apostles teach, and to share the common life and break bread and to pray. A sense of awe was everywhere. All whose faith had drawn them together held everything in common. With one mind they kept up their daily attendance at the temple, and, breaking bread in private houses, shared their meals with unaffected joy as they praised God” – Acts 2:42-47, New English Bible

4. Serving Others Deeps Our Faith

faith growing through serving others

This is when you ask yourself the hard question, “Am I living for myself and for what I can get out of an experience/relationship/position? Or am I living to serve and to give of who I am?

If we only live our Christian life for what we can gain, then we become like a stagnant pond. In that state, our goal is to self-protect what we have and only gain from others.

The water becomes polluted and overgrown with stuff that suffocates life. That’s not what God has called us too. We want to become like rivers who pour out fresh water freely to all those who are thirsty and in need. (You can learn more about in my article: Generosity in the Bible) I read a powerful quote recently from Banning Liebscher’s new book, Rooted: the Hidden Places Where God Develops You.

“If our serving never really requires us to sacrifice for something bigger than ourselves, then it’s likely that our serving is about us.”

Banning Liebscher

Here is the reality check, it’s not about us. It’s always going to be about Him.

On top of all this when we serve we see God at work in and through us and those around us. This builds your faith in God.

Not so with you. Instead, whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant, and whoever wants to be first must be slave of all. For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.” – Mark 10:43-45

5. Faith Comes By Hearing

faith comes by hearing - listening to the Word of God

It’s interesting to note that all these things are things that are practical and can be applied to our lives. So many times we think to grow spiritually we need to do something profound. But in reality we just need to be disciplined. The same goes with this one…faith comes by hearing.

I have found listening to the Word, teaching/preaching (audio, video, or in person), and Christian music can have a profound effect on our walk with God. It raises our faith level, encourages, us and matures us.

It’s amazing how you can have an ok or kind of funky day and listening to the Christian radio can totally change your mood. That’s because your faith is increasing. You are hearing the hosts talk about God and songs that bring truth to you. You are getting your eyes off of you and onto Jesus!

So then faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God – Romans 10:17

6. What You Consume Will Either Grow Your Faith or Starve It.

Tvs - What you consume effects your faith

This is similar to the one above but with a slightly different stance. See what we consume via media….yup TV, Internet, Music, Magazines, etc… can have a direct impact on your faith. Now, I am not saying stop watching everything unless its a preacher. I am not promoting legalism.

What I want to encourage you is to be mindful of what your eyes and ears consume. Not everything is beneficial for us.

I was once watching this new TV series and I really enjoyed it. The third season had already started, but I noticed the show was getting darker and darker. Adding occultic elements and evil stuff. I ignored it and just kept watching since I was 3 season in and wanted to know what happened.

Everytime I watched it….oooo did I feel funky. But I am sad to say it didn’t stop me. Finally one day in prayer the Lord spoke to me CLEAR as day and told me to stop watching the show. I repented and I flat out stopped watching.

I then went to work that day (worked at a church at that time) and I was chatting with a co-worker and I told her the whole story of how God told me to stop watching this show. She dropped her jaw and said…”No way! God told me to stop watching that show too!!”

Talk about encouraging! We both felt like it was confirmation for us. And it was so beautiful that the Lord was watching out for us and protecting us.

Just remember…if you consume junk…you will in turn give out junk.

“I have the right to do anything,” you say—but not everything is beneficial. “I have the right to do anything”—but not everything is constructive. No one should seek their own good, but the good of others. – 1 Corinthians 10:23-24

7. Keep Accountable

faith growing tip 7 get an accountability partner

To piggyback on fellowship…I want to take another step further. I want to talk about accountability. This can come from a good close friend, a pastor, or older brother/sister in Christ.

This is a person you confide the areas you struggle in and ask them to keep you accountable and have them cover you in prayer. Having this kind of support and mentorship can really help your faith growing.

Exodus 17 tells an amazing story about the power of supportive relationships.

The Amalekites came and attacked the Israelites at Rephidim. Moses said to Joshua, “Pick out some men to go and fight the Amalekites tomorrow. I will stand on top of the hill holding the stick that God told me to carry.” Joshua did as Moses commanded him and went out to fight the Amalekites, while Moses, Aaron, and Hur went up to the top of the hill. As long as Moses held up his arms, the Israelites won, but when he put his arms down, the Amalekites started winning. When Moses’ arms grew tired, Aaron and Hur brought a stone for him to sit on, while they stood beside him and held up his arms, holding them steady until the sun went down.  In this way Joshua totally defeated the Amalekites. – Exodus 17: 8-17

Having people like Aaron and Hur in our lives helps us beat and win spiritual battles. They are their to lift our arms up when our faith is tired of the battle.

If you don’t have an accountability partner I would encourage you pray and seek one out. This relationship can be such a blessing to your life.

I hope these 7 ways of growing your faith have opened your eyes to the importance of simple and practical things that can powerfully propel us forward in our faith!

So very true! I loved the last one: serve! That's the heart of Jesus in us. He served in humbleness and love while on earth showing us, this is the way! A heart yielded to Him will serve and give as it has been given. Thank you for sharing!
