My Review – A Confident Heart

It’s not every day when you read a book that is at sharp as a scalpel. This book cut my chest right open and exposed my eyes to a lot of my heart issues that I was ignoring or never saw. Swope wastes no time and dives into the deep issues of doubt that every woman faces in her life.

Her chapters are filled with scripture that helps the reader get grounded in what God says over us. And how to break the lies the enemy has planted in our heart.

She hits hard on identity, but not in a way you would expect. Here is a snippet of chapter 6, “I’m Not Good Enough”:

A Confident Heart by Renee Swope Quote“Then the eyes of both of them were opened, and they realized they were naked; so they sewed fig leaves together and made coverings for themselves. Then the man and his wife heard the sound of the LORD God as he was walking in the garden in the cool of the day, and they hid from the LORD God among the trees of the garden. But the LORD God called to the man, “Where are you?”He answered, “I heard you in the garden, and I was afraid because I was naked;b so I hid.” And he said, “Who told you that you were naked? Have you eaten from the tree that I commanded you not to eat from?” Gen. 3:7-11

God asked who had told them they were naked. In other words, “Who told you that something is wrong with you?” By asking this, He acknowledges that there was someone casting shame on them, and it wasn’t Him. He wanted to know they had an enemy whispering lies into their hearts causing them to move away from Him and from each other…

…Rarely do we stop to ask, “Who is saying these things?” Whi is causing me to doubt myself? Is it me? Is there something from my past that led me to believe this? Or is it the enemy of my soul disguising his voice as my own?…”

Throughout the book, Swope drops these little thinking bombs. And as you begin to process stuff with the Lord you can feel your heart being strengthened.Or should I say becoming confident!

If you want to dig even deeper into what Swope is teaching, she has reflection and discussion questions you can go through at the end of each chapter. Because of these questions in some ways, I wish I did this book in a small group setting. Don’t get me wrong I think this is a wonderful book to read on your own.

I do think in a group you could dig deeper and get some fruitful discussion going. I went through most of the question and it made each chapter become more applicable.
