10 Characteristics of a Godly Woman According to Proverbs 31

Come explore Proverbs 31 with me and discover powerful characteristics of a Godly woman. These attributes are things we can pursue as we grow and mature in our faith.

Characteristics of a Godly Woman

I remember the very first time reading Proverbs 31. I was only a teen and I was so inspired by this woman. Her qualities and attributes blew me away. She does things with such excellence and everyone around her is blessed. How amazing is that?

The Bible teaches us that we are to live godly lives as women so that our lives will reflect our relationship with God. And Mrs. Proverbs 31 does just that!

From verse 10-31, we see many characteristics that we can display as women of God. And in this article, we will look at ten of them.

Characteristics of a Godly Woman

Characteristics of a Christian woman

1. She Enrich the Lives of Others

The heart of her husband trusts in her [with secure confidence], And he will have no lack of gain. – Proverbs 31:11

A godly Christian woman enriches the lives of others around her. If she is married she makes the lives of her husband and children better and more meaningful. If single, she enriches the relationships around her whether at home, church, or/and work.

She leaves others better than she found them! Others trust her because she has proven herself trustworthy, and they know they can count on her to be there for them.

2. She Has Good Intentions Toward Others

She comforts, encourages, and does him only good and not evil. All the days of her life. – Proverbs 31:12

A godly woman has pure intentions toward others because she fears God, and is secure in Him.

We are called to love, even when it’s not easy or someone is very unloveable. He has commanded us to love our neighbors as ourselves! We can only do this when are relationship with Jesus is strong and we deal with our insecurities.

God’s Word shows us how we ought to live our lives and treat others so that we will obey God’s commands concerning our relationship with them.

When we love others, we will want the best for them at all times and consider their feelings before we act. As godly women, we are to impact the lives of others positively.

3. She Desires the Best for Your Home and Environment

She is like the merchant ships [abounding with treasure]; She brings her [household’s] food from far away. – Proverbs 31:14

Many women are naturally home makers, and we look for the best of everything which will help us make our homes cozy and warm.

Even though I am single I still feel this way about my home. I have a natural desire to nurture and have my home be a place that someone can come to find rest, peace, and some good food!

Having this godly characteristics looks like being able to provide an environment for yourself and others that is beneficial. This could even go beyond home and even into your work environment.

Whether it is ingredients for food, supplies, décor, or other home accessories, we should always look for what is best.

4. She Plans Ahead

She rises also while it is still night. And gives food to her household. And assigns tasks to her maids. – Proverbs 31:15

One attribute that is clearly seen is the ability to plan ahead and get things done. She doesn’t succumb to laziness. Dropping the ball and having her family go hungry.

Now, planning and excuting can be naturally easier for some depending their personality type. But it’s something we can all grow in. We can all learn different calendar systems, punctuality, agenda, and so forth.

I just want to encourage you if you struggle with planning. It may take some adjusting but if you really try you can really strengthen this muscle in your life. Plus, it will change your life being organized and planned out.

5. She Makes Wise Investments

She considers a field before she buys or accepts it [expanding her business prudently]; With her profits she plants fruitful vines in her vineyard. – Proverbs 31:16

I love this verse, especially because this was written in ancient times and yet this lady is killing it!

See making investment decisions is not only for men because God has given wisdom and knowledge to both men and women! A godly woman considers good investments and plans on how she will acquire them.

She does not squander or blow through her money but puts it aside and invests it in a profitable business or asset.

And much like number 4 she plans this is something we can learn. Most people don’t know much about investing, but there are tons of books, articles, video, etc…that can point you into the right direction.

6. She Helps the Needy

She opens and extends her hand to the poor, And she reaches out her filled hands to the needy – Proverbs 31:20

A godly attribute that both men and women of God should have is the hear to give to the poor and less fortunate.

It can look like donating clothes during Christmas or at other times, give food to a hungry family, pay for someone’s lunch, pay for someone’s education, etc…

As God has provided for you, you can also bless the lives of others who need help of one kind or another.

7. She Speaks with Wisdom

She opens her mouth in [skillful and godly] wisdom, And the teaching of kindness is on her tongue [giving counsel and instruction]. – Proverbs 31:26

An important quality to being a godly woman is being careful about the words we allows to come out of her mouth.

Proverbs says she speaks with wisdom because she knows that her words can bless or harm others.

She is kind to others with her words even when they have not treated her right.

We want to always make sure that our words build others up instead of tearing them down. And that we don’t use our words to spread gossip or malice.

Plus, if you desire wisdom in a specific area of your life, ask God, and He will give it to you!

If any of you lacks wisdom [to guide him through a decision or circumstance], he is to ask of [our benevolent] God, who gives to everyone generously and without rebuke or blame, and it will be given to him. – James 1:5

8. She Avoid Idleness

She looks well to how things go in her household, And does not eat the bread of idleness. – Proverbs 31:27

This one is going to hurt a little bit. the Bible is pretty clear it’s thoughts on idleness which is just another word for laziness or “sluggishness” according to the Strong Concordance.

God is calling us to be a people who are productive! This doesn’t mean we don’t have times of rest or have a nice vacation. But we don’t abuse our time with idleness.

If you find yourself with lots of time and nothing to do, read a book that will build you spiritually or look for how to generate additional income.

Idleness brings with it other problems like addiction to social media and neglecting priorities. It is always best to try to have something meaningful to occupy your time.

9. She Has Good Character

“Many daughters have done nobly, and well [with the strength of character that is steadfast in goodness], But you excel them all.” – Proverbs 31:29

Character is very important and as godly women, we need to build it with the help of the Lord and other believers. Things like integrity, loyalty, kindness, honesty, patience and so much more.

You can ask God to show you which areas of your character you need to build so that you can reflect His character.

Also, it’s important to note that many good character traits are found in the fruit of the Spirit (Galatians 5) and we only can grow in that by walking in the Spirit.

10. She Fears God

Charm and grace are deceptive, and [superficial] beauty is vain, But a woman who fears the Lord [reverently worshiping, obeying, serving, and trusting Him with awe-filled respect], she shall be praised. – Proverbs 31:30

Everyone praises a woman who fears God because they know that she will always defend her faith and treat others with love and kindness.

As a godly woman, work on your relationship with God, and know that fearing God is more attractive than having charm or physical beauty.

I know that can be hard to wrap around our mind since in modern culture we value appearance. But in the long run beauty disappears, but a relationship with God and serving Him….thats a beauty that never fades!

And the fear of the Lord is not fear as in scared of God. It means that you revere Him, respect and obey His commands.
