The God that we serve is gracious, kind, and merciful. The Bible teaches us that He loves us, and there is no created thing that can separate us from His love.
However, it can be challenging to understand that regardless of what we do, God knows us and understands our intentions, and nothing in our hearts can make Him upset or disappointed in us.
It is critical for all Christians to understand that God knows our hearts. He is one with us by His Spirit and knows everything about us.
We cannot hide anything from Him, yet He longs to draw you closer to Him.

God Knows Your Heart Meaning
The phrase ‘God knows our hearts’ is often used in the Christian walk, but what does this really mean?
What does it mean when we say that God knows our hearts?
This phrase is somewhat self-explanatory, but the reality is that God knows everything about our hearts. He knows the good in our hearts, and He knows the bad in our hearts. He even knows the stuff we are unaware of.
Our hearts are how we believe in God and the gospel of Jesus. The Bible says that we confess with our mouth, but we believe with the heart (Rom 10:9).
With our heart, we believe in our God; with our heart, we love Him, and He sees the intentions of our heart, even when we do not know how to show it or outwork it.
However, God also knows the troubles in our hearts.
The Bible also says that out of the heart springs the issues of life (Prov 4:34), and Jesus said that from the heart come evil things (Matt 12:35).
God knows the deepest secrets of our hearts that we think no one can see, but His grace is sufficient for us. He sees the bad and the good things in our hearts, and His mercy covers every sin and presents us pure before Him. Isn’t He good?!
The fact that God sees the deepest depths of our hearts is never an excuse to do wrong things. However, it does bring us comfort when we slip up and make mistakes.
God knows who we truly are in Him, and He views us through the lens of Jesus Christ.
When we are one with God by His spirit when we are born again, God transforms our hearts, teaches us to walk in righteousness, and the responses and posture of our heart changes in Him to reflect His own heart in every situation.
What Does The Bible Say About God Knowing Your Heart?
It is known among Christians that God knows our hearts, but what does the Bible say about this intimate knowledge He has about us?
There are many Scriptures that teach us that God knows our hearts.
- 1 Kings 8:39 says that God alone knows the hearts of the sons of men.
- 1 Samuel 16:7 says that man looks at the outward appearance and ways of a person, but God looks at the heart.
- Psalm 44:21 says that God knows the secrets of the heart.
- Psalm 139 is an entire Psalm about how God knows everything about us, including our innermost thoughts and ways, even stating that He made our souls and knows them well.
- Jeremiah 17:9-10 states that the heart of man is deceitful above all else, but the Lord searches the heart.
However, among the best Scriptures about God knowing our heart is found in the New Testament, on this side of the cross of Christ, in 1 John 3:18-21.
‘My little children, let us not love in word or in tongue, but in deed and in truth. And by this, we know that we are of the truth and shall assure our hearts before Him. For if our heart condemns us, God is greater than our heart and knows all things. Beloved, if our heart does not condemn us, we have confidence toward God.’
Here we learn that God knows all things, including our hearts, and that He is greater than our hearts, which means that anything in our hearts that is not from Him is less important than Him and does not disqualify us from being with Him.
God sees the good and the bad in your heart, and His grace is sufficient for all of it. God is greater than your heart, and it cannot condemn you, which gives us confidence in God, and brings us closer to Him.
The Lord Searches Out The Heart
There is another layer to this that is important to remember. God not only knows our hearts, but He searches them.
Jeremiah 17:10 says, ‘I, the Lord, search the heart, I test the mind, even to give every man according to his ways, according to the fruit of his doings.’
This is an Old Testament Scripture, and it must be brought through the blood of Jesus, as God no longer holds our actions against us, and we do not need to earn anything from Him, as everything in Him is freely given in Christ.
It does teach us that God searches our hearts and is intentional about what He finds. He searches our hearts to know us, to become closer to us, and to teach us more about Himself. He searches our hearts to become closer to us and to reveal Himself to us.
We Can’t Hide Our Hearts From The Lord
When exploring how God knows our hearts, it is important to know that we cannot hide anything from the Lord.
‘Indeed, the darkness shall not hide from You, But the night shines as the day; The darkness and the light are both alike to You. If I say, “Surely the darkness shall fall on me,” Even the night shall be light about me; Even there Your hand shall lead me, And Your right hand shall hold me.
If I take the wings of the morning And dwell in the uttermost parts of the sea, If I ascend into heaven, You are there; If I make my bed in hell, behold, You are there. Where can I go from Your Spirit? Or where can I flee from Your presence?’ – Psalms 139:7-12 NKJV
This passage of Scripture teaches us that our all-seeing God knows everything about us. He even knows our words before we speak them. Nothing we do, think, say, feel, or know can be hidden from Him, not even in the darkest places.
We cannot hide anything from Him, yet He loves us the same. Nothing can separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus, so let the Lord search your heart, let Him remove what He wants to remove, and let Him sow the seeds He wants to grow.
The Lord loves your heart. Let Him have all of it.
