9 Beautiful St. Francis of Assisi Prayers

In this article, we will explore some of the most famous St. Francis of Assisi prayers. These prayers are beautiful and will cause your heart to draw closer to the Lord…

For the past 15 years, I have studied church history on and off. It’s something I really enjoy and find fruitful. We can learn so much from events and people in the past. Especially when we look at the way they developed their relationship with God.

Last year, I shared St. Patrick and his famous prayer called the Breastplate. It’s probably one of my favorite prayers. It’s one of protection, but what I love about St. Francis prayers is the focus to exalt the Lord.

You will notice as you read that many of these prayers are prayers of adoration, some are prayers for peace, and others of praise. It shows you how much St. Francis devotion and love he had towards God. They are truly a beautiful testament to their relationship.

A Little Bit About St. Francis

Born in late 1181 AD as Giovanni di Pietro di Bernardone in Assisi, Italy. Meaning he was born before the protestant reformation which took place in 1500s. In his youth he was a bit of wild man, partying and drinking. Then, during a battle between Assisi and Perugia he was captured and thrown into prison. They say that during that time in prison, he had visions from the Lord.

Francis later became a friar, deacon, and a mystic. Here is a little more about his life…

“Later in life, Francis reportedly received a vision that left him with the stigmata of Christ — marks resembling the wounds Jesus Christ suffered when he was crucified — making Francis the first person to receive such holy wounds. He was canonized as a saint on July 16, 1228. During his life, he also developed a deep love of nature and animals and is known as the patron saint of the environment and animals; his life and words have had a lasting resonance with millions of followers across the globe. Each October, many animals the world over are blessed on his feast day.” (source)

St. Francis Prayer for Peace

Lord, make me an instrument of your peace.
Where there is hatred let me sow love;
Where there is injury, pardon;
Where there is doubt, faith;
Where there is despair, hope;
Where there is darkness, light;
Where there is sadness, joy.

O Divine Master, grant that I may not so much seek
To be consoled as to console;
To be understood as to understand;
To be loved as to love.
For it is in giving that we receive;
It is in pardoning that we are pardoned;
And it is in dying that we are born to eternal life.

Amen.

Saint Francis’s Canticle of All Creatures

Most High, all-powerful, all-good Lord, All praise is Yours, all glory, all honour and all blessings.

To you alone, Most High, do they belong, and no mortal lips are worthy to pronounce Your Name.

Praised be You my Lord with all Your creatures,
especially Sir Brother Sun,
Who is the day through whom You give us light.
And he is beautiful and radiant with great splendour,
Of You Most High, he bears the likeness.

Praised be You, my Lord, through Sister Moon and the stars,
In the heavens you have made them bright, precious and fair.

Praised be You, my Lord, through Brothers Wind and Air,
And fair and stormy, all weather’s moods,
by which You cherish all that You have made.

Praised be You my Lord through Sister Water,
So useful, humble, precious and pure.

Praised be You my Lord through Brother Fire,
through whom You light the night and he is beautiful and playful and robust and strong.

Praised be You my Lord through our Sister,
Mother Earth
who sustains and governs us,
producing varied fruits with colored flowers and herbs.
Praise be You my Lord through those who grant pardon for love of You and bear sickness and trial.

Blessed are those who endure in peace, By You Most High, they will be crowned.

Praised be You, my Lord through Sister Death,
from whom no-one living can escape. Woe to those who die in mortal sin! Blessed are they She finds doing Your Will.

No second death can do them harm. Praise and bless my Lord and give Him thanks,
And serve Him with great humility.
