The Fisherman’s Prayer, Breton, and Other Fishing Prayers

In this article, we will look at the famous Fisherman’s prayer and some other fishing prayers I’m sure you will love.

Fishing can be such a wonderful hobby, sport, and activity. It’s relaxing, and if you love fish, it can also be delicious. I recently got to have fresh salmon from a friend who went fishing in Alaska. It was amazing! I know for many, fishing can be a big part of their life and past time. And to honor those who love to fish, I wanted to share some fisherman’s prayers.

Now, these fishing prayers are not like my typical articles about prayer. These are poetic prayers that are usually stated in a way for beauty and reverence. I mean, sure, you could pray them to the Lord, but a more real conversation with Him is what He really longs for. But poems are a great way to share our faith, and passion and also teach God’s Word, much like The Sand Dollar Story and my collection of Christmas Poems.

So, what do you do with these fisherman’s prayers? Well, I got some great suggestions below, and after that, you can check out all prayers!

How To Use These Fisherman’s Prayers

Since these prayers are poetic in nature, they work great for certain things. Here are just four creative ways you can use them. I’m sure you have even more great ideas.

Gifts

Using one of these fisherman’s prayers as a gift would be great for anyone who loves to fish. This could be as simple as writing it on the inside cover of a book or buying a gift with the actual prayer written on it. There are many options even on Amazon! Here is a couple that I really loved.

Birthday Cards or Other Greeting Cards

Another simple way is to share these lovely prayers in a card! Usually, we send cards during someone’s birthday, but you can use these in any type of greeting card. Sometimes it’s nice to send a card for no reason. Just a thoughtful way to encourage and bless someone.

Decore

If you are thinking of decorating a den, office, or bedroom and want to give tribute to fishing. These prayers would work great! You can print them out and frame them, or if you are artistic, you could even paint or draw something with the prayer on it.

Funerals

This may seem more of an unusual use for these prayers, but actually, it’s a beautiful way to pay tribute to a loved one who enjoyed fishing and loved the Lord. I know that when my dad passed, I wanted to make his funeral and headstone special and unique to him. So, picking the right funeral Bible verses, songs/hymns, poems, and quotes really matters.

The Fisherman’s Prayer (I Pray That I May Live To Fish…)

(this is a lovely short fishing prayer that can be used for someone who enjoys fishing or can be used at a funeral to share a loved one’s love of fishing.)

I pray that I may live to fish, Until my dying day.
And when it comes to my last cast, I then most humbly pray.
When in the Lord's safe landing net, I'm peacefully asleep.
That I will be judged, Good enough to keep."
Amen

Breton Fisherman’s Prayer

Thy sea, O God, so great
My boat so small.
It cannot be that any happy fate
Will me befall
Save as Thy goodness opens paths for me
Through the consuming vastness of the sea.

Thy winds, O God, so strong,
So slight my sail.
How could I curb and bit them on the long
And saltry trail,
Unless Thy love were mightier than the wrath
Of all the tempests that beset my path?

Thy world, O God, so fierce,
And I so frail.
Yet, though its arrows threaten oft to pierce
My fragile mail,
Cities of refuge rise where dangers cease,
Sweet silences abound, and all is peace.

The Fishing Prayer

God grant me a little more time to pick up my rod and cast my line.
Work and worry disappear when I pick up my fishing gear.
With the boat on the trailer, I will go anywhere.
The fishing's not too slow.
Work doesn't seem so fine when I see what's at the end of my fishing line.
When I am feeble, old, and gray, please don't take my pole away.
When the pearly gates open wide, please find this old fisherman, one good lake inside.

- Jeannette Hoppes (from Farmer's Almanac)

The Fisherman’s Prayer ( Lord, I Love The Great Outdoors)

Lord, I love the great outdoors,
Enjoying this great world of Yours,
A fisherman with countless dreams of fishing in your lakes and streams.
I cast my line, then cast my cares,
And know you'll answer all my prayers.

I'll catch a fish and when I do,
I always offer thanks to You.
I hope that I can also be just like a man from Galilee,
Who shared God's love with everyone: Jesus Christ, God's only son.

Amen

A Prayer for Fishermen

Oh Lord, we come before thee with humble hearts and open minds,
Ready to cast out into the depths of the sea our lines.
Grant us patience on this voyage, let us learn from its course.
Show us that life can be found in its ever-shifting force.

Help us as we travel deep with grace.
Let us find peace in knowing what you can put in place.
Grant unto us wonder and awe at all you have created.
And teach us to find joy in fishing as we are in the still and waited

Keep our lines strong, even when they seem so still.
That we may go home and jouyously share our fill
For surely you will bless our fishing trip
Because You O' Lord are the captian of our ship

An Ode to the Fishermen

O' the sea we sail, the waves our guide,
Into that perilous unknown they ride.

We cast our nets and pray with wide eyes,
Blessings fill our boats as we raise high cries.

Guide our hands O' Lord as we fish.
Though the waters rage and swish.

O Great Master of Waters, hear us now plea:
May our fishermen's prayer bring safety unto thee!

The Fishing Prayer

Oh Lord, be with us and guide us on our fishing trips.
Help the fish fill our nets and give us a successful journey.
Bless us and all that sail in vessels upon the sea.
Let us never forget how fragile life can be.

A Funny Fishermen’s Prayer

Oh, Lord who controls the sea,
May I cast my lines with glee.
Give me a big ol' fish, oh please!
A juicy carp or trout to feast!
I beg you fill my net so deep,
With a great fish, so I won't weep.
No sad tales of poor catches I seek,
Grant me this prayer as I take to the creek!

-M. Tumino

A Fishing Prayer

Wonderous Lord,
We thank you for this day.
For the opportunity to cast our lines and pray.
Guide us in our search for fish,
And grant us peace, favor and bliss.
Let us learn from the small creatures of the sea,
To be humble and lead lives of grace with Thee.
Amen.
