The Hedge of Protection: What It Is and How to Pray for One

In this post, we will explore what the Bible has to say about a hedge of protection. We will also look at praying for a hedge of protection.

We all want to be safe and that is why we care about security in various areas of our lives. We want to live in safe neighborhoods, travel safely, and have our information protected on the internet.

Just as we look for protection in earthly areas, God provides us with spiritual protection for our lives and everything that belongs to us. He puts a hedge of protection around us.

You have probably heard about a hedge of protection and wondered what it is or how to have one around you. The Bible gives examples of a hedge of protection, and we can learn what it means to us as believers, and how to pray for one.

Hedge of Protection

But let all who take refuge and put their trust in You rejoice,
Let them ever sing for joy;
Because You cover and shelter them,
Let those who love Your name be joyful and exult in You.
– Psalm 5:11 AMP

When we have the assurance of God’s protection, we rejoice because we know we are safe, and nothing can harm us.

What is a Hedge of Protection in the Bible?

A hedge of protection in the Bible means a protective defense against attacks from the devil or things that may harm us. God puts this hedge around us to protect us every day, and it acts as a boundary that surrounds us in the spirit realm. Let us look at an example of a hedge of protection in the Bible.

What is a Hedge of Protection in the Bible?

Job was a man who had a hedge of protection around him. This is where we see it mentioned in the Bible:

“’Does Job fear God for nothing?’ Satan replied. ‘Have you not put a hedge around him and his household and everything he has? You have blessed the work of his hands, so that his flocks and herds are spread throughout the land.’” Job 1:9-10

From the above Scripture, we see that God had put a hedge of protection around Job and everything that he owned. This hedge was not a physical one that was visible with the eyes, but a spiritual one that God put around him.

According to Strong’s Concordance, we see the word hedge means to shut in or a type of fence.

שׂוּךְsûwk, sook; a primitive root; to entwine, i.e. shut in (for formation, protection or restraint):—fence, (make an) hedge (up).

If we dig a little deeper we can read in the Holman Bible Dictionary says about a hedge in scripture.

HEDGE Boundary formed by a dense row of usually thorny shrubs. In ancient Palestine hedges served to protect vineyards from damage by animals or intruders (Ps. 80:12-13; Isa. 5:5). To put a hedge around someone means to protect (Job 1:10). “To hedge in” means to hem in or obstruct (Job 3:23; Lam. 3:7; Hos. 2:6).

In the same way, God puts a hedge of protection around us and everything we have to ensure our safety in the physical and spiritual realms.

What Does a Hedge of Protection Do For Us as Believers?

I thought it would be good to give you some more examples of a hedge of protection so that we can understand what it does for us as believers.

Elisha and the Army of Aram

When the king of Aram sent his army to surround and attack Elisha, the prophet, God protected him supernaturally. Elisha’s servant was scared of the army, and Elisha asked God to open his eyes and show him His army that was there to protect them. God opened the spiritual eyes of the servant and he saw the hills full of horses and chariots of fire all around Elisha (2 Kings 6:16-17).

God sent his heavenly army to protect Elisha from an attack by the Aramean army. God sends an invisible army of His angels to protect us when we are in danger of any kind. It was like a hedge of angels were placed around them!

When we pray for God’s protection, we can rest assured that He has dispatched His angels to protect us.

Daniel in the Lion’s Den

When Daniel was thrown into the lion’s den for defying the king and continuing to pray to God, he survived. God sent his angel to shut the mouths of the lions and Daniel made it throughout the night safely (Daniel 6:22). God rescued Daniel from an attack by the lions, and this inspired the king to worship God.

Like Daniel, we sometimes find ourselves in situations that are equal to being thrown in the lion’s den, and we need God to rescue us. He rescues us from trouble, hurt, accidents, physical dangers, etc.

I have heard countless testimonies of believers walking away from car accidents that should have been fatal. Yet they walked away with only a few scratches.

Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego

Daniel had three friends, Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego, who were thrown into a furnace of fire for refusing to worship the idol set up by King Nebuchadnezzar. They refused to worship the idol because they were God-fearing men and trusted that God would save them from the fire. God saved them, and the flames of fire did not harm them in any way.

King Nebuchadnezzar noticed a fourth person whom he identified as the Son of God walking around in the fire with the three men. None of the four men were bound while in the fire (Daniel 3:24-25). This shows us that when we face persecution because of our faith, God will come to our rescue and protect us. God’s hedge of protection will always be around us whether we see it or not.

King Saul and David

When God rejected Saul as king, he sent the prophet Samuel to anoint David as the new king. Before David took the throne, Saul hated him and tried to kill him several times. Each time he failed because David found a way of escape (1 Samuel 19:10).

God had put a hedge of protection around David and that is why he escaped the attacks of Saul. God’s plan was that David was to ascend the throne one day. Similarly, God protects us from those who want to destroy our lives or make us miss the opportunities He has for us.

From the above stories, we see that God’s hedge of protection manifests in different ways in our lives. The bottom line is that it protects us in all kinds of situations.

Hedge of Protection Prayer

Below I share a hedge of protection prayer. I encourage you to take this prayer and make it your own as part of your prayer strategy. Personalize it, expand it, and let it inspire you as you pray it to the Lord. Let it come straight from your heart and not just this screen. God desires us to be real and raw with Him.

Lord, I praise you because you are my shield and protector. You watch over me daily and I know that I am safe everywhere I go.

Put Your hedge of protection around me and everything I have, and protect me from the enemy and every kind of danger. Protect my family and the whole household. Cover them wherever they go and in everything they do.

May your hedge of protection be always around me when I leave the house and come back later in the day. Watch over my every step and keep me away from harm and danger.

Also, Lord, I ask that you would give me wisdom and a sensitivity to the Holy Spirit to avoid potential dangers that may lay ahead for me and my family.

In the mighty name of Jesus, I pray. Amen…and Amen!

Hedge of Protection Prayer

Another really cool and powerful prayer to check out is called the Breastplate of St.Patrick. It’s a prayer for protection from Saint Patrick himself! If you want something straight out of scripture to pray I also recommend Psalm 91.

I sure hope you have enjoyed this post on the hedge of protection! I pray it has taught you something and caused your heart to draw closer to the Lord. Praying for a hedge of protection is so important not just for ourselves but for our family, schools, military and more. If you would like to leave me a comment you can do so below. I would love to hear from you and what God is revealing to you!
