Today, I want to share the amazing benefits of Holy Basil also known as Tulsi. This herb has been used for over 3,000 years in Asia, especially in ayurvedic medicine. It has countless benefits for the body and some of them haven’t even been discovered yet.
This ancient herb is getting a lot of attention now. There have been many recent studies on Tulsi and its ability to heal and bring health to the body.
I was blown away when I read what US National Library of Medicine said about Holy Basil.
“There is mounting evidence that Tulsi can address physical, chemical, metabolic and psychological stress through a unique combination of pharmacological actions. Tulsi has been found to protect organs and tissues against chemical stress from industrial pollutants and heavy metals, and physical stress from prolonged physical exertion, ischemia, physical restraint and exposure to cold and excessive noise. Tulsi has also been shown to counter metabolic stress through normalization of blood glucose, blood pressure, and lipid levels, and psychological stress through positive effects on memory and cognitive function and through its anxiolytic and anti-depressant properties. Tulsi’s broad-spectrum antimicrobial activity, which includes activity against a range of human and animal pathogens, suggests it can be used as a hand sanitizer, mouthwash and water purifier as well as in animal rearing, wound healing, the preservation of food stuffs and herbal raw materials and traveler’s health.”
Just that statement alone makes you see how powerful this little plant is.
The great thing about this is that it can be taken so many ways.
- Drink it – You can easily make a tea with Holy Basil
- Eat it
- Topical: In creams, lotions, oils etc
- Take a supplement

“The September 2007 issue of the “Journal of Medicinal Foods” published a study that showed holy basil possesses the significant detoxifying ability. In the study, researchers gave holy basil leaf extract in doses of 100 mg, 200 mg, 300 mg and 400 mg per kg body weight to laboratory rats for five days prior to exposure to a toxin. Holy basil dosage of 300 mg per kg protected the rats from liver damage, inhibited the oxidation of lipids and proteins and enhanced the activity of liver-detoxifying enzymes.”
Those are just a few things that this herb can do for you. No wonder it is considered one of the top herbs used in medicine in India. I have personally used holy basil to help me with my digestive issues. It’s great at helping an upset stomach or indigestion.
