10 Amazing Scientific Facts in the Bible

A collection of some proven scientific facts in the Bible. God’s Word is truly amazing. 

I remember years ago I heard fact 1 about the Earth being round and I was so amazed. This led me to discover even more scientific truths in the Bible. And talk about mind blowing! the Bible is thousands of years old, but God revealed things that we have only discovered recent times. 

There is so much in the Bible that if we really look and study it will bring such incredible transformation to outlives. There is NO other book like it in the world!

With all that said, after writing Fun Facts About The Bible I thought to add this post as they compliment each other very well. Now, I am in no way a scientist that can go super deep into each one of these. I am sharing what I have learned in hopes it will bless you and encourage you to get into God’s Word more. 

Scientific Facts in the Bible

Each scientific fact below shows you where in the Bible it’s found and what the Bible proves.

Fact 1: The Bible Indicates That the Earth Is Round

In ancient times many believed that the Earth was flat, on a giant turtle, or a giant map that God held.

Hmmm…not sure why a turtle? But It is said that the earliest documented mention of a spherical world was in the 5^th century by Greek philophers. But the book of Isaiah was written around the 7^th century and Job is even older than that (400 years before Moses).

Have you not known? Have you not heard? Has it not been told you from the beginning? Have you not understood from the foundations of the earth?  It is He who sits above the circle of the earth, And its inhabitants are like grasshoppers, Who stretches out the heavens like a curtain, And spreads them out like a tent to dwell in. – Isaiah 40:21-22 NKJV

When He prepared the heavens, I was there, When He drew a circle on the face of the deep, – Proverbs 8:27 NKJV

He drew a circular horizon on the face of the waters, At the boundary of light and darkness. – Job 26:10 NKJV

Fact 2: The Bible Says That the Earth Is Suspended in Space.

Ok, so the Bible is clear the the Earth is round. Check.

But it doesn’t stop there! 

He stretches out the north over empty space; He hangs the earth on nothing. – Job 26:7 NKJV

How in the world did Job know that the Earth hung on nothing??

Job had no understanding of space and the universe ( January 1, 1925 was when we discovered the universe). He has no idea that the earth floats through its orbit because of gravity. Only God who made everything would have known that.

Fact 3: The Bible Teaches Good Hygiene

And when he who has a discharge is cleansed of his discharge, then he shall count for himself seven days for his cleansing, wash his clothes, and bathe his body in running water; then he shall be clean. – Leviticus 15:13 NKJV

It wasn’t until the mid-1800’s when a study by Ignaz Semmelweis and Oliver Wendell Holmes was established that hospital-acquired diseases were transmitted via the hands of health care workers. They saw this in the maternity ward when many women were dying because doctors would not wash their hands between examining women and delivering babies. 

But God knew the importance of hygiene and even mentions “running water.” Knowing it would wash away the bacteria or other harmful pathogens.

In our modern times washing our hands in water is a normal occurrence because we understand that there is a mircorbial world. But in the days of Moses…only God, Creator of All would know that. 

Fact 4: The Bible Teaches Sanitization

Also you shall have a place outside the camp, where you may go out; and you shall have an implement among your equipment, and when you sit down outside, you shall dig with it and turn and cover your refuse. – Deuteronomy 23:12-13

Over 3,500 years ago God made it very clear to His people that when they needed to go to the bathroom that they needed to do it OUTSIDE of the camp. They were to bring something to dig a hole and do their business and cover it up. Preventing diseases and stinkiness!

It is said that more soldiers died because of sanitization issues with human waste than actually dying in battle! 

Fact 5: The Bible Teaches About Quarantining

Way before anyone understood how contagious diseases spread God gave the Israelites instructions to quarantine until the disease stopped. Imagine if during the great plagues and epidemic of the past they had followed the laws of quarantine and cleanings in the Torah. 

The Lord said to Moses, 2 “Command the Israelites to send away from the camp anyone who has a defiling skin disease or a discharge of any kind, or who is ceremonially unclean because of a dead body. 3 Send away male and female alike; send them outside the camp so they will not defile their camp, where I dwell among them.” 4 The Israelites did so; they sent them outside the camp. They did just as the Lord had instructed Moses – Numbers 5:1-4

“Anyone with such a defiling disease must wear torn clothes, let their hair be unkempt ,cover the lower part of their face and cry out, ‘Unclean! Unclean!’As long as they have the disease they remain unclean. They must live alone; they must live outside the camp. – Leviticus 13:45-46

Fact 6: The Bible Teaches About the Importance of Blood

For the life of the flesh is in the blood, and I have given it to you upon the altar to make atonement for your souls; for it is the blood that makes atonement for the soul. Leviticus 17:11

For 3000 years bloodletting (originated in ancient Egypt) was a popular way doctors treated most sicknesses. From cutting to lychees…the problem was too much blood. Imagine having a common cold and the doctor gets the knife out! Many people died from this horrible treatment method. George Washington, the first President of the United States happen to be one of them.

But according to the Bible, it teaches us that “life is in the blood.” The problem is that science didn’t teach us that until the late 19th century. Now we know blood is vital for life and the blood tells us so much about our health and what is going on in our body.  Instead of bloodletting we now do blood transfusions. 

Fact 7: The Bible Teaches About Oceanography

the Bible has multiple passages that speak on the oceans. Even the great oceanographer Matthew Maury was inspired by God’s Word. He discovered ocean currents and their paths because of Psalm 8:8. 

the birds in the sky, and the fish in the sea, all that swim the paths of the seas. – Psalm 8:8

And here is another fascinating fact. It wasn’t till the 1970’s that we stopped believing the ocean was only fed by rivers and rain. We finally had strong enough submarines to discover that there were springs on the ocean floor. I’m pretty sure Job didn’t have a submarine….but he did have a divine revelation! 

Have you journeyed to the springs of the sea or walked in the recesses of the deep? – Job 38:16

But it doesn’t stop there! Apparently, when the prophet Jonah was in the depths of the ocean he saw mountains.   It’s been only in modern times that we have discovered seamounts (mountains under the ocean.) 

The waters surrounded me, even to my soul; The deep closed around me; Weeds were wrapped around my head. I went down to the moorings of the mountains; The earth with its bars closed behind me forever; Yet You have brought up my life from the pit, O Lord, my God. – Jonah 2:5-6

Fact 8: The Bible Teaches We Can Get Medicine From Plants

Many ancient cultures used herbal remedies. Some ancient cultures were not the best at this. For example in ancient Egypt…

“Lizard blood, dead mice, mud and moldy bread were all used as topical ointments and dressings, and women were sometimes dosed with horse saliva as a cure for an impaired libido.

Most disgusting of all, Egyptian physicians used human and animal excrement as a cure-all remedy for diseases and injuries…” (source)

Not sure what the fascination with poop is about. Even the moldy bread….but NO, thank you! The Bible states that God has given us trees and leaves for medicine.

Along the bank of the river, on this side and that, will grow all kinds of trees used for food; their leaves will not wither, and their fruit will not fail. They will bear fruit every month, because their water flows from the sanctuary. Their fruit will be for food, and their leaves for medicine. – Ezekiel 47:12 (see also Revelation 22:2) 

In our modern world medicine has advanced tremendously, but did you know a lot of medicines are derived or inspired from compounds found in plants? For example aspirin (salicylates)…

“The compound was first synthesized in 1890 by a man named Felix Hoffmann. Aspirin is modelled after the naturally occurring polyphenol salicylic acid — a compound found in a handful of plants including Salix alba (white willow), Spirea spp. (wintergreens), and Betula spp. (birch). All of these plants were traditionally used for conditions involving injury, pain, and inflammation.” (source)

Once again the Bible, this ancient book had mysteries written in it that only our modern time would understand. 

Fact 9: The Bible Teaches What to Eat 

The Bible has a lot of restrictions on what to eat and what NOT to eat. It may sound like a weird list but God has a purpose and knew that certain things would make us sick. 

Example 1: Don’t Eat Birds of Prey 

‘And these you shall regard as an abomination among the birds; they shall not be eaten, they are an abomination: the eagle, the vulture, the buzzard, 14 the kite, and the falcon after its kind; 15 every raven after its kind, 16 the ostrich, the short-eared owl, the sea gull, and the hawk after its kind; 17 the little owl, the fisher owl, and the screech owl; 18 the white owl, the jackdaw, and the carrion vulture; 19 the stork, the heron after its kind, the hoopoe, and the bat. – Leviticus 11:13-19

We now know that many of these birds like eagles, owls, and hawks can spread diseases to us, humans when we consume them.

For example, avian influenza (clean and unclean birds), and there are thoughts that the coronavirus was spread by someone consuming bats. 

Example 1: Don’t Eat Pork

and the swine, though it divides the hoof, having cloven hooves, yet does not chew the cud, is unclean to you. 8 Their flesh you shall not eat, and their carcasses you shall not touch. They are unclean to you. – Leviticus 11:7-8

Now this one seems weird since most every eats pork unless you are kosher. So, why would God say not to eat bacon?? Sadly Pork is not the cleanest of meats. God knew this and wanted to protect His people. 

• Parasites

Undercooked pork can transmit a parasite called trichinosis, which leads to infection.

• Hepatits E 

If you eat pork liver you can get hepatitis E. 

• Multiple Sclerosis

“The robust link between pork and MS has been known at least since the 1980s, when researchers analyzed the relationship between per capita pork consumption and MS across dozens of countries (22 Trusted Source).

While pork-averse nations like Israel and India were nearly spared from MS’s degenerative grips, more liberal consumers, such as West Germany and Denmark, faced sky-high rates.” (source)

And there are more than just those 3 things! As an Italian, I love my salami but I do limit my intake because pork is just not the greatest of meats. God knew it and told us. 

Fact 10: The Bible Teaches About Drinking Safe Water

This portion has TWO scientific facts wrapped into it! Double whammy!

One is the importance of drinking clean water. If an animal died and fell in a pot of water DO NOT drink it.

It seems like common sense to us since we know about bacteria, but to the ancient world, they would think no big deal. Plus who wants to walk all the way to the well or river to get fresh water? 

But the second fact here is the types of animals God mentions. Mice carry all kinds of diseases (from their fleas too), like the bubonic plague (the black death), and amphibians tend to carry salmonella. 

And it wasn’t till the last 100 years or so that we learned that contaminated water can cause things like cholera, and typhoid.

Well, there you have it! 10 neat facts about the Bible and science. Pretty cool…huh? God’s Word never ceases to amaze me!

Well, I hope they have stirred you up to draw closer to God and His word. It’s amazing all the stuff we can learn if we will just read and study. God in all His goodness, placed truths in His word that aid us both in the natural and spiritual! Praise God!
