How to Pray a Birthday Prayer for Myself

In this post we will look at a Birthday Prayer For Myself: A How-to Guide to help you pray over yourself during your birthday. So, let’s start celebrating and praying…

If you have been around Think About Such Things you will know I am a big fan of birthdays. I think they are a great way to celebrate loved ones and create lasting memories. This is why I have written several posts to help celebrate in a way that blesses the birthday person and glorifies God. Here are some of those posts if you are interested in checking them out:

Birthday Prayer for Myself

The posts above are more geared towards you giving to the birthday person. This time around I wanted to write to YOU. The person who is having a birthday coming up. And how you can pray for yourself on your birthday.

I hope my steps below make it easy for you to pray and seek God during your birthday prayer for yourself.

“A Birthday Prayer for Myself”

A happy birthday prayer for myself

As a Christian prayer is part of my lifestyle but on my birthday I like to pray and thank God and be specific about certain things for the coming year.

Let Your Birthday Prayer Come From The Heart

The Bible is clear that God desires us to be real and to pray from the heart. He’s not big on reading a random prayer that you are emotionally and mentally not connected with. So, don’t do that for your birthday.

So, when you start to pray get quiet before God and really search your heart on what you want to say to Him. Let this be a special time between you and Him.

Don’t worry about sounding perfect or eliquent…just talk to God like you would a friend. (John 15:15)

Talk to God on your Birthday. Share from your heart

And when you start reading each section just be aware this is not some kind of order your prayer needs to be in. You will see this in the example prayer below.

A Thanksgiving Birthday Prayer

Enter into his gates with thanksgiving, and into his courts with praise: be thankful unto him, and bless his name. – Psalm 100:4

Let your birthday be a time to reflect on all the things you are thankful for. It can be stuff that has happened within the year and/or stuff throughout your life.

And try not to list them off to the Lord. But talk to Him about the things you are thankful for and why. Let me a natural conversation with Him. Tell Him thank you for this birthday and for the birthday to come.

Here are some basic examples of things you can be thankful for:

  • Your family and friends
  • Your home
  • Your job and income
  • Your health and protection
  • Things you love

In our world it’s easy to just focus on the negative. But if you will be surprised if you sit and think how many good things have happened or how God has protected you.

My family has experienced financial hardships and there are times it gets really hard. But then I thought about it… I’ve never experienced hunger and I’ve always had roof over my head.

And it was like WOW! I am so thankful that even though I have faced hardships with money, I haven’t felt those kinds of hardships. It also moves my heart to pray for those who are experiencing those kinds of things.

Thanksgiving - Being thankful for your Birthday

Ask God To Bless You

During your birthday time with the Lord ask Him to bless you. You can do this by asking specifically what kind of blessings, just in general. And keep in mind blessings is not all about what you can get.

Many times in scripture blessing is about God being with you. Protecting you, bringing you guidance, favor, provision, and more. It’s not always a shiny new red corvette showing up at your door. God does bless us at times with material goods, but the spiritual and eternal gifts are far better.

At the end of the day, God giving you a life of full peace and joy is far better than stuff.

Bring Requests Before God

Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. – Philipians 4:6

Bringing prayer requests to God is called supplication. This is a time when you bring your desires or needs before God and ask Him about them.

I encourage you to not hold back…bring those request before Him. And remember to always ask for God’s will to be done. Sometimes we want or desire things and it’s not always the best thing for us.

In the Lord’s prayer, Jesus states we should pray…“your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.” -Matthew 6:10

Pray for Others

You would think that birthday prayers for myself should be well all about me…right? I mean last time I checked this post was all about a “Happy Birthday To Me Prayer!” haha

Well, I guess you can just pray for yourself for your birthday. But why not take this moment and lift up others?

You can go about this so many ways. Here are a few different ideas:

  • Pray for people that come to mind that have blessed and supported you this year.
  • Pray for family members and friends
  • Pray for those you know who are struggling
  • Pray for those you don’t even know. People who are sick, hungry, and in danger.

There is no right or wrong way. You can use the ideas I mentioned above or you can wait on the Lord and see anyone pops in your head to pray for.

How long should my birthday prayer for myself be?

Praying over yourself on your birthday

This is totally up to you! In scripture you see long prayers and you see really short prayers. You can sit with the Lord and pray for 30min or an hour on your birthday. Or you can spend just a few minutes in prayer!

The one thing I encourage you to do is when you pray on your birthday to make sure you are not in a hurry or distracted. Get alone with God…this is a special time with Him. You can do this at home, go for a prayer walk, head to church, etc…

And if you feel His presence while in prayer, don’t cut it short. Spend time in His presence and let Him minister to you.

An Example Of My Birthday Prayer

Like I mentioned above God is not a big fan reading and reciting prayers. If you are going to read it, it must come from a sincere place in your heart.

I do think reading examples of prayers can be beneficial in learning how to pray. And I encourage you if prayer is new to you…get into the Bible. Read the prayers Jesus prayed and others. Also, Billy Graham has a helpful article called Prayer 101.

This is something I would pray on my birthday. I hope it blesses and inspires you in your personal birthday prayer for yourself.

Heavenly Father, I come before you today in a heart full of gratitude. I want to thank you for this day as it is my birthday. And I ask that at this time you would bless this prayer and bless this day as I celebrate it with my family.

Lord, I ask you the bless me this coming year. That you would make a way for me and provide for me. Lord, bless me with wisdom, strength, and courage. So, that I can grow and fulfill the call you have on my life.

And Lord, I want to thank you for the wonderful family you have given me. They have been by my side supporting and loving me. I ask that you, in turn, would bless them and be with them. I ask that you, O' Lord would draw them close to yourself. And Lord thank you for providing for me this year and giving me what I need in my career.

Lord, you know the desires of my heart and I ask that you would bring new friends in my life and help to make the right decisions at work.
Thank you again for this birthday Lord. May this new year be filled with your blessing.

In the might name of Jesus, Amen and Amen

I hope this post has blessed you! And I hope you have a wonderful Birthday! Full of God’s blessing and lots of love.
